The Threes formed in 2006 with one mission in mind: to bring catchy arrangements and complex harmonies back to indie rock. Returns from 2008′s debut album Head Voices indicates they’re on the right track, with Kansas City’s Ink Magazine calling the disc, “a declaration of a musical force,” and naming it Best Local Album 2008, while tagging the band as a Local Band to Watch in 2009. Des Moines City View praised the band’s, “energetic pop-rock songs laced with hooks and melodies,” and Present Magazine called the effort, “ambitious, adventurous, and exuberant.”
Comparisons are easy to come by, with Weezer, The Muffs, and Mates of State topping the list. The Threes claim as influences everything from They Might Be Giants to Buddy Guy, but the sum in this case is truly greater than its parts. One might ask what you get if you take a pair of pop-obsessed, synth-playing singers, a blues guitarist steeped in punk, and an eclectic pocket drummer. The answer is The Threes.
